Andrea Esswein

In her work, Andrea Esswein makes use of a wide variety of techniques, including photography, paint-ing, drawing, video, conceptual art and performance art.

Since 1998, her copy collages (copygraphs and copygrams) have enabled her to carve out a very special position for herself in the art scene. Esswein uses the copier as a photographic apparatus with which to create copy originals To do this, she places objects, plants, papers, animals and people on the copier. Placed together piece by piece and orthogonally like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, the individual photographed sheets are combined to create a new picture, with interfaces and overlaps remaining visible even after all the reworking. The collage technique gives rise to a fragmented image in which the original motif appears from different perspectives simultaneously and in a deliberately altered proportion-al arrangement. The artist is concerned with the construction of a new pictorial reality that moves away from customary perspectives.

In addition to numerous private collections, Andrea Esswein's works are represented in the following public collections, among others: Graphic Collection of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, German Dance Archive/SK Foundation Culture of Sparkasse Köln Bonn, (CopyDance), Die Weserburg, Museum of Modern Art, Bremen, Regional Council of Karlsruhe, Artothek Wiesbaden, City of Wiesbaden, Collection of the City of Mainz, Ministry of Science, Further Education, and Culture, Rhineland-Palatinate, Raiffeisenbank Foundation, Sparkasse Mainz, Ludwigshafen District Administration, Collection of the Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz, Mainz.
